Meaning  > I like this word because it describes a reasonable state of certainty without any real and absolute evidence. Generally considered or reputed to be, thought to be rather than as a result of 100% evidence.

Example : The putative boss of the mafia. Everything thinks he is the boss of the mafia but so far no one has gathered enough evidence to prove absolutely and conclusively that he is the boss.
